Today is the start of our West coast and Namaqualand Wild flower tour. We meet at the Airport in Johannesburg for our flight to Cape Town, where we depart and travel in the direction of Langebaan – Velddrift, where we visit the street known as Bokkom Lane. Here you see how the Bokkoms are dried. From Velddrift we continue to Lamberts Bay whilst travelling along the West coast.
We overnight in Lamberts Bay on a Dinner, Bed and Breakfast basis. Drinks are for your own account.
After breakfast we depart from Lambertsbay and travel to Nieuwoudtville, the small town on the Bokkeveld escarpment, known as the bulb capital of the world. Here is a large variety of bulbinella, that are endemic to this region. We also visit the Dutch Reformed Church in this small town. The church is built from sandstone, and the Pulpit is built with white sandstone. Our travels take us further to the Nieuwoudtville Waterfall, whilst we will be looking for the best flowers in the region. We depart in the afternoon back to Vanrhynsdorp, where we visit the Succulent Nursery. There you will have the opportunity to buy one or two little succulents to take back home. The succulents in this nursery are all native to South Africa. We will be staying overnight in the Vredendal area on Dinner, Bed and Breakfast basis. Drinks are for your own account.
After a good night’s rest and a great breakfast, we depart from Vredendal, travelling North. We will be passing towns like Bitterfontein, Garies and also the Knersvlakte. Here you will see kilometers of white quartz stones, and in between these little stones you will be surprised to see the succulents that are growing in this “Treasure Chest” We will be heading on to either the Namaqua National Park, or into the Kamiesberg mountains to find the best flowers. It is in this region where you will normally see fields of orange Namaqualand Daisies. We again overnight at our Vredendal accommodation, where we enjoy a delicious regional quisine dinner.
